As Memorial Day weekend dawns in the US, cannabis advocates have a victory to celebrate as Rhode Island became the 19th state in America to legalize recreational cannabis. Governor Dan McKee signed the Rhode Island Cannabis Act into law just a few days ago, marking a big swing for the small, Northeast state. Under the newly passed law, possession and home-growing of cannabis is now legal for adults age 21 or older, and in-store sales may begin as soon as December 1, 2022. The Rhode Island Cannabis Act also establishes a framework for “common-sense” adult use cannabis regulation with a strong emphasis on public health and public safety. The new law will give courts until July 1, 2024, to automatically expunge past convictions, and those who want their expungement sooner may request it.

 

Governor McKee stated, “This bill successfully incorporates our priorities of making sure cannabis legalization is equitable, controlled, and safe,” said Governor McKee. “In addition, it creates a process for the automatic expungement of past cannabis convictions. My Administration’s original legalization plan also included such a provision and I am thrilled that the Assembly recognized the importance of this particular issue. The end result is a win for our state both socially and economically.”

 

Other details in the new law include:

The legislation calls for a 20 percent tax rate, split up into the 7 percent sales tax, a new 10 percent cannabis tax, and a 3 percent tax by the municipality where the marijuana is sold. In addition, the legislation makes numerous investments in the creation of an equitable, accessible cannabis retail market through the set-aside of certain application fee revenues and the reservation of a portion of new licenses for social equity applicants and worker-owned cooperatives.

Psilocybin, the psychoactive compound found in numerous species of magic mushrooms, has been making headlines in the medical community over the last few years for its ability to treat many difficult mental illnesses. Depression is one of them.

Last May 21, the American Psychiatric Association (APA) annual meeting revealed the “largest, randomized, controlled, double-blind study of psilocybin therapy ever completed,” reads the press release.

 

Subjects were administered with one dose of either 25mg or 10mg COMP360 psilocybin among patients who had TRD (treatment-resistant depression). The symptoms were measured based on the Montgomery-Asberg depression rating scale (MADRS), a scale that has been around since 1979 helping psychiatrists gauge levels of sadness and inner tension. They found that the participants who were given 25mg of COMP360 psilocybin were found to have a “highly statistically significant reduction in symptoms of depression after three weeks.” In addition, their benefits lasted much longer too, they noted that for some of the participants, their depression scores were better for as long as three months.

 

Because of this, the scientists report that psilocybin offers “a rapid and durable response for up to 122 weeks.”

 

“Treatment-resistant depression is one of the biggest challenges we face in psychiatry, and chances of success decreases with each treatment that a patient tries,” explains David J. Hellerstein MD, the study’s Principal Investigator as well as a Professor of Clinical Psychiatry at the Columbia University Irving Medical Center. “It’s rare to see such positive outcomes of clinical trials in this disease area, which is why these results are so significant. I hope this represents a major step in finding new options for people living with treatment-resistant depression.”

 

“Our mission is all about developing mental health innovations through scientific evidence, which is why we’re so honored to present the largest study of its kind at the APA,” says Dr. Guy Goodwin. “In this study, a significant number of patients experienced improvement in their symptoms of depression after just a single dose of 25mg psilocybin with psychological support, with effects lasting for up to three months of the study. We now need to continue our research to understand if this can be replicated in even larger trials.”

 

Other Studies

 

The body of clinical research on psilocybin’s effects on severe and treatment-resistant depression continues to grow, with increasingly amazing results.

 

Another study whose results were released earlier this year found that individuals with major depression found relief from psilocybin treatment, some for a year or even more. For the trial, 19 adults who had a long history of severe depression were given 2 doses of psilocybin, and went through talk therapy.

 

After 12 months, 70% of the participants still had antidepressant responses while over half were in remission. “Psilocybin not only produces significant and immediate effects, it also has a long duration which suggests that it may be uniquely useful new treatment for depression,” explains Roland Griffiths, PhD. “Compared to standard antidepressants, which must be taken for long stretches of time, psilocybin has the potential to enduringly relieve the symptoms of depression with one or two treatments,” he adds.

 

Further, another study found that psilocybin helps the depressed brain by making it more flexible, which is different to how antidepressants work. Medical experts say that when the brain is depressed, brain activity patterns are restricted and rigid. However, this is where psilocybin helps, improving the brain’s flexibility, reports The Guardian.

 

“These findings are important because for the first time we find that psilocybin works differently from conventional antidepressants, making the brain more flexible and fluid, and less entrenched in the negative thinking patterns associated with depression,” says Professor David Nutt, who heads the Imperial Centre for Psychedelic Research. “This supports our initial predictions and confirms psilocybin could be a real alternative approach to depression treatments,” he says.

 

“The effect seen with psilocybin is consistent across two studies related to people getting better, and was not seen with a conventional antidepressant,” adds Professor Robin Carhart-Harris, the research paper’s senior author. “In previous studies we had seen a similar effect in the brain when people were scanned whilst on a psychedelic, but here we’re seeing it weeks after treatment for depression, which suggests a carryover of the acute drug action.”

As we enter into our “hot period” here in the western hemisphere, we can see that some places are in desperate need of water.

 

Currently where I’m living we are experience a pretty intense drought with water rations occurring daily. I have to note that I do not live in the US, so don’t worry – it’s not some conspiracy or anything of the sort.

 

Nonetheless, this drought prompted me to look into other areas in the US that are potentially experiencing similar weather conditions, and whether this is something that we should be concerned about in the future?

More importantly, I wanted to see what can be done and what is being done in order to create a sustainable future for everyone. I always hear about these environmental problems yet hardly ever do we see articles talking about in-depth solutions.

 

I believe, that we do have the opportunity to take some serious steps to persevere our world, reduce our need to consume from natural fresh water deposits and leave “drinking water” for people to consume.

 

In fact, most people don’t know that the vast majority of fresh water is not consumed by people – but by companies that use it to spray down or dilute whatever chemicals they are packaging for your consumption – YUM!

 

Before we get into all of that – WTF DOES THIS HAVE TO DO WITH CANNABIS?

 

I’m glad I forced you to ask this question because as you can see by the picture above, the area in the US that suffers from drought is the same area that happens to grow the most amount of cannabis. The entire West Coast is “green” from California to Washington, and even extending into Canada – that entire area grows a whole lot of reefer.

 

Depending on the methods of growing you are using, water consumption varies. However, according to one study reported on by MJBizDaily;

 

They found that the water demand for growing cannabis typically exceeds that of commodity crops by nearly double.

 

On average, the researchers found, a cannabis plant consumes an estimated 22.7 liters, or 6 gallons, of water per day during the growing season, which is typically 150 days long from June through October.

 

By comparison, wine grapes, which are an irrigated crop produced in the same region as many outdoor cannabis crops in Northern California, use an estimated 12.64 liters of water per day.

 

According to a 2019 survey in Humboldt County:

 

The water usage of outdoor cannabis cultivation in Northern California is 5.5 gallons per day per plant in August and 5.1 gallons per day per plant in September.

Indoor cultivation used 2.5 gallons per day per plant in August and 2.8 gallons per day per plant in September.

Irrigated agriculture in California is considered the largest water consumer, accounting for 70% to 80% of stored surface water.

 

As water scarcity continues to be a problem because of agricultural demands, population growth and climate change, the higher water needs for cannabis crops will challenge the marijuana and hemp industries while burdening the environment, researchers concluded. – SOURCE

 

According to some other studies, the usage of water for indoor facilities is lower, but the point of this article is not to poke at the findings of these studies – but to reiterate the fact that cannabis, and many other crops – require water to grow.

 

However, when our water reserves are running dry – people tend to want to blame cannabis for being the biggest factor in water consumption.

 

But what about Coca Cola? How about McDonalds? How about food packaging companies, CNC factories, etc? Industrial water use is also a very water dependent practice and while it’s easy to blame something like cannabis or walnuts for droughts – all of society is dependent on fresh water in one way or another.

 

For example, to make 500 ml of Coca Cola…you need roughly 1.9 liters of water.

As a result, a small 500 ml bottle of Coca-Cola takes roughly 1.9 litres of water to make (though Coca-Cola prefers to cite their own average figure from 2013 to the effect that each litre of Coke uses 1.29 litres of water). – Source  

 

While cannabis plants might require a lot of water, it’s dwarfed by the sheer amount of water that companies like Coca Cola consumes

Now that we’ve pointed out everyone’s shit-stains – let’s start talking about solutions. I for one have been thinking about one that could solve global water shortages in a matter of years – but I simply don’t understand how it isn’t a thing yet.

 

Do we really have a water problem?

 

Some people like to put the blame solely on cannabis for its “high water consumption”, but as we have pointed out – there are many other industries that also utilize a lot of water.

 

In an article on The Tower, they cite a specific report by the Department of National Intelligence (DNI) in which they highlighted these key findings;

 

During the next 10 years, many countries important to the United States will experience water problems—shortages, poor water quality, or floods—that will risk instability and state failure, increase regional tensions, and distract them from working with the United States on important US policy objectives.

Between now and 2040, fresh water availability will not keep up with demand absent more effective management of water resources. Water problems will hinder the ability of key countries to produce food and generate energy, posing a risk to global food markets and hobbling economic growth. As a result of demographic and economic development pressures, North Africa, the Middle East, and South Asia will face major challenges coping with water problems. – DNI Report

 

The article continues to illustrate that Fresh Water is not just a problem for some, but quickly becoming a global problem:

 

More than half the earth will soon be facing shortages. A set of maps provided by the National Intelligence Council shows that, by 2025, parts of the world whose water supplies will be “severely,” “extremely,” or “exceptionally” affected include the entire western half of the United States, a swath of the Middle East from Egypt to Pakistan, the whole of India, and about three-quarters of China. A decade from now, billions of people will face a severe crisis if nothing is done. – David Hazony, TheTower.Org

 

With such a grim outlook on what our future holds, it becomes imperative that we begin to work on solutions that can help us sustain ourselves during excessive dry periods. Fortunately, there is one country that has already pioneered a possible solution and perhaps, if we follow suit and begin to plan our agriculture in one way or another – we might be able to turn the problem into a solution that could make earth just a little bit better in the long run.

 

Two Major Solutions from Israel

 

The first one is probably a “no brainer” to some growers, but for the vast majority of agriculture (the largest consumer of water) – how you water your crops is important. Currently, the most popular methods include flood irrigation which is where the crop area is simply flooded with water, which allows it to grow.

 

However, a man by the name of Simcha Blass discovered another technique that started gaining popularity in the 1970s called “drip irrigation”, where well-placed nozzles would drip water near the area of the plant that provides the maximum intake of water.

 

In modern hydroponics, these techniques are often used – which is why the claim about cannabis water consumption varies depending on the operation. Nonetheless, this innovation helps reduce water consumption of plants between 40%-70% depending to some estimates.

 

When it comes to agriculture, this should become the standard. Potentially repurposing industrial spaces to vertically grow  certain crops in order to allow the soil to heal & replenish itself could also work in tandem with the water conservation effort. Needless to say, we definitely need a lot more R & D within the fields of mass cultivation and with hydroponics and these innovative irrigation systems – we’re already doing “something” in order to diminish our waste.

 

But, as the report from the Department of National Intelligence suggest, that scattered rainfall and other factors might limit our access to fresh water. This is a problem, because once we run out of this – you can rest assured that violent warfare would follow suit. We never want to reach a limited thresh hold of fresh water…humanity would become savage instantly.

 

The Second Solution from Israel

 

Another thing that has perplexed me for years is a simple solution that hasn’t been scaled up due to the “cost” of it all. I’m talking about Desalination Plants.

 

While Israel worked hard on reducing their need for water, they also had to think about new resources to get water and considering that 71% of the earth’s surface is made up of water – we shouldn’t have a water problem really.

 

The big issue is logistics. Salt water cannot be consumed and while 91% of all the water on the planet can be found in the oceans, without proper treatment it is not safe to consume for humans, crops, or even for industrial applications.

 

This is where Israeli innovation shines once again. In the Article Cited above, they provide some insight on the history of desalination;

 

“Desalination has the feel of science, engineering, and alchemy combined,” writes Siegel. “The ancient Romans tried to purify seawater for their army, but their efforts never went far. During World War II, American scientists also began thinking about ways” to remove salt from seawater. In February 1964, President Lyndon Johnson gave a major speech about directing America’s resources toward finding the holy grail of affordable desalination, comparing the nation’s efforts to Israel’s—much to the fury of the Arab world. He even invited Israel’s Prime Minister, Levi Eshkol, to the White House for talks on the subject. But these efforts were hampered by high costs and the Vietnam War. The first experimental desalination plant in Israel didn’t go online until the 1980s. But by then, a major technological breakthrough was already in the works. – TheTower.Org

 

A US inventor by the name of Sidney Loeb invented the method of Reverse Osmosis, which occurs when you push the water through selective membranes. This separates salts and minerals from the fresh water and this technology is what helped the Israeli’s have a surplus of water in the middle of a desert.

 

Israel’s first Reverse Osmosis Desalination plant was concluded in 2005, and by 2014, half of the water consumed in the nation came from the process. They are currently developing more. But the most important aspect of all of this is that they have become immune to droughts. They have proven that there is a viable tech solution that can provide fresh drinking water while producing additional benefit such as trace metals & minerals that is separated such as lithium and magnesium and so forth.

 

One thing that the article hits right in the Bull’s Eye is the following Excerpt;

 

What does this mean for the world? It means that, suddenly, water scarcity has become something you can solve simply and decisively. All you need is a coastline and a lot of money, but nothing beyond the financial capacity of any national government. For the cost of a few fighter jets, you can build a world-class RO plant and pump the water into the system. Suddenly, water has transformed from a problem of natural resources to a problem of finding the political will and the budget. Today any country that doesn’t have enough water has only its leaders to blame. –TheTower.Org

 

The author is 100% correct in this assessment. The only reason there is a lack of water is because there is a lack of leadership addressing this. Some estimates put the cost of a highly functional desalination plant at a cool $1 billion per plant. This is roughly the cost of the one they built in San Diego.

 

Now imagine what would have happened if the United States spent $40 billion dollars (which was sent to Private Military Contractors in the Ukraine to fund a war) and rather spent it on developing desalination plants all over the East and West Coast of the US.

 

What if a few of those plants were placed in regions with notoriously low water fall…places like Somalia and other sectors with unusually high dry periods?

 

Could the US have solved the global water issue with the same budget they sent to Europe? Probably not! But it certainly would have gone a long way in making the US more water stable. They could have probably made the US become impervious to droughts, keeping food production on track despite the weather patterns.

 

This is also where hydroponics and vertical farming – which can reduce water consumption by up to 90% – and together we can begin to build a world that our children’s children could enjoy.

 

What about Industry?

 

There’s a reason I don’t like the idea of “Climate Change”. It’s an ethereal and unsolvable problem that seems to be raising funds but never actually getting anything done. We know that agriculture depends on water, and we know that we also don’t technically NEED Coca Cola in our lives.

 

Let me put it to you this way, if you had to choose to remove one of the two – Coca Cola would always get the ax because water is an essential.

 

Yet, we know that Coke utilizes billions of liters of water per day to produce their gasified sugar water and generate roughly $2 Billion Dollars in profits per month as reported by MacroTrends.com,

Coca-Cola gross profit for the twelve months ending March 31, 2022 was $24.183B, a 21.73% increase year-over-year.”

 

This is one company – albeit the largest soft drink manufacturer in the world –  but when you take all of the profit from these companies (including cannabis firms) – it should be obvious that they would invest into this kind of technology.

 

However, considering that companies under the current model of Smithian Capitalism – profits is their highest priority. For now, they don’t want to spend on anything they don’t have to…therefore it’s more “cost effective” to consume our fresh water supplies instead.

 

And this is where the problem lies.

 

These larger corporations often benefit from government tax breaks and special deals they arrange with different States – that they are always the last to pick up the bill when it comes to social cost. In fact, these CEOs and other elite business people believe they alone are the ones who should be making decisions about how we ought to use our water, and why they are the best gatekeepers of this precious resource.

 

Water is, of course, the most important raw material we have today in the world. It’s a question of whether we should privatize the normal water supply for the population. And there are two different opinions on the matter. The one opinion, which I think is extreme, is represented by the NGOs, who bang on about declaring water a public right. That means that as a human being you should have a right to water. That’s an extreme solution. The other view says that water is a foodstuff like any other, and like any other foodstuff it should have a market value. Personally, I believe it’s better to give a foodstuff a value so that we’re all aware it has its price, and then that one should take specific measures for the part of the population that has no access to this water, and there are many different possibilities there.” – Nestle CEO, Peter Brabeck-Letmathe

 

I pasted the whole quote because it was obvious that after the Nestle company had some major pushback due to these statements, follow up Snopes articles “disproves” and “fact checked” his comments retroactively.

 

The fact of the matter is that water is a public right – especially since we ALL pay taxes that are used to subsidize companies like Nestle. To be fair, Nestle has been working on reducing their water consumption as pointed out in Statista.com

Nestlé’s total water withdrawals from all areas amounted to 98 million cubic meters in 2021. This was a decrease from the previous year of 17 million cubic meters, and a decrease of 40 million cubic meters compared with water withdrawals in 2016. – Statista

 

And according to MacroTrends.com Nestle raked in over $40 billion in 2021 in gross profits;

 

Nestle SA annual gross profit for 2021 was $45.954B, a 3.3% increase from 2020.

 

But more importantly, would a desalination plant actually benefit Nestlé’s bottom line? Considering that they utilized roughly 98 million cubic meters of water in 2021, and the Ashdod Desalination Plant in Israel produces 100 million cubic meters of water per year…it strikes me as odd as to why more companies haven’t invested in their own personal plants.

 

Being impervious to droughts means that you get market stability, and companies like Nestle, Coca Cola could make a minimal increase in product costs (something they do every year) to cover the expenses of these desalination plants.

 

How cannabis can lead the way

 

The Cannabis Industry is well positioned to begin doing programs like this. Environmental groups are raising hell over cannabis’ water consumption – however, if companies on the Western Coast came together to build a series of desalination plants aimed at supplanting natural water usage – the long term gains is undeniable.

 

Furthermore, excess desalination can help feed rivers, lakes, and other bodies of water currently affected by drought and over use from industry.

 

The fact of the matter is that whenever I hear about “water crises” I can only conclude that this is a fabricated “issue”….just like the “scarcity of food argument” where we’re able to simply throw away up to 50% of our food.

 

Our technology has reached a point where we can begin to leverage them to secure things like food and water for all…but in order to do this we need to remove a little bit of greed from our way of doing business, look at the long term gains, and perhaps make large businesses like Coca Cola, Nestle, etc…make their own water.

 

If we’re going to be subsidizing their companies, the least they can do is replenish the water they consume. It’s not like they are lacking the funds to achieve this.

With several countries carrying our extensive research on cannabis and hemp, one of the latest research from Poland discovered something interesting. This set of Poland researchers found out that bees fed with hemp extract aged slower than those on a regular diet.

 

For many of us, growing up was a fantasy when we were younger but it turns out growing older stops being interesting after a while. At a tender age, all we wanted to do was grow old enough to go to college, or old enough to drive, get our bike or go to the dispensary or bar.

 

But after some time, that stops being fun and aging then becomes overwhelming. Things that didn’t hurt start hurting, hair starts growing in some places and stops growing in others, and physical activities become a difficult task. For the physical things one can do, execution becomes slower and the body is sore for a long time after such a task.

 

Now, what we have today are humans trying very hard to delay or even entirely reverse the process of aging. In fact, that has become a huge business too with the industry bigger than ever before. According to research published by Statista, the global anti-aging market is estimated to have an estimated value of approximately $58.5 billion in 2020. The anti-aging industry is calculated to witness 7% in compound annual growth rate between 2021 and 2026.

 

Evidently, not every one of these anti-aging supplements works. A larger percentage of these products are nothing but hyped snake oil employed to financially prey on desperate individuals who either one to delay it or reverse the aging process. However, thanks to new research, there may be one thing out there that has the potential to fulfill the needs of people looking for anti-aging products — hemp.

 

The existence of bees and hemp

The Poladian researchers recently examined the relationship between honest bees and hemp extract supplements. The research was carried out in affiliation with the University of Life Sciences in Lublin under the Department of Invertebrate Ecophysiology and Experimental Biology.

 

According to the researchers, they evaluated the effects of hemp extract on the antioxidant system and its overall activities. The research evaluated peroxidases, catalase, superoxide dismutase, glutathione, and overall antioxidant potential in the hemolymph of adult bees. The research grouped the bees into three separate groups;

 

 

 

 

The researchers took samples of hemolymph from each treatment from the first day of the study and once every other week full the bees died. All of the disease bees were then examined by the researchers.

 

According to the researchers, all antioxidant enzyme activities were lower in the control group compared to that of the experimental groups. The highest level of antioxidant activities was recorded in the group fed tour cannabis using syringes.

 

The life span of these bees were also prolonged in the group supplemented with hemp than that of the control group (the group consuming only sugar syrup). The bees in the control group survived for 35 days, with the groups on hemp extract in syrup and on strips surviving for 52 days and 49 days respectively. Thanks to the antioxidant properties of hemp extract, the activities of major antioxidant enzymes was increased, protecting the bees against free radicals. To this end, the aging process of the honey bees was greatly delayed, the researchers concluded.

 

Does Hemp Have Anti-Aging Advantages?

Cannabinoids (THC, CBD, CBN, CBG, CBN) have been proven to offer various health benefits to humans, most especially for seniors. Cannabinoids help to improve brain function, reduce inflammation and relive arthritis pain. However, there’s been a discovery of another great benefit of cannabinoids on seniors’ health which has so much to do with the process of aging. 

 

Looking at the human anatomy, we have an Endocannabinoid System (ECS), meaning that the human body naturally produces cannabinoids. This is why it is called Endocannabinoid, that is, from within. These same sets of cannabinoids are also present in cannabis and hemp and they are called Phytocannabinoids.  Above all, these two kinds of cannabinoids function similarly, providing parallel health advantages within the human body.

 

The ECS is charged with maintaining homeostasis balance in the human body and it effortlessly does this with the help of cannabinoids. Think of the ECS as the body’s control centre that keeps working around the clock like a well-oiled engine. It governs our entire physiological system- the digestive system, the nervous system, hormones, brain, bones and skin, immune system, heart and liver.

 

As our body grows old, the ECS’s ability to produce cannabinoids declines causing an unbalanced system. To this end, our body becomes susceptible to diseases and illnesses. The more cannabinoid production declines, the more the level of function in the ECS.

 

So in theory, supplementing the human body wine phytocannabinoids will greatly improve ECS functioning hence delaying or reversing the anti-aging process. Some illnesses like illnesses, soreness joints, and muscle pain will be cured. However, as things stand, research into ECS is still fairly new but results have shown promising results for this home health remedy.

 

 

Conclusion

 

Apparently, bees do not have similar anatomy and physiological processes as humans, so how the research in Poland applies to humans still needs in-depth research. However, the results obtained from the bee research are quite insightful. The fact now is hemp extract is good for both humans and bees for increasing consumption in both species is a win-win situation.

 

Also, it’s no longer news about the drastic dwindling of the global bee population and the catastrophic effect it would cause on the global ecosystem. Hence, it will always be a good idea to help bees live longer. From this point of view the results of the research are quite incredible and hopefully will be employed to help increase the global bee population.

Things are beginning to take shape as regards cannabis reform in the UK a few months after the Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan stopped the persecution of cannabis possession. At the moment, the Mayor has established a commission with the responsibility of decriminalizing cannabis in the UK.

 

Following the latest report from BBC, the board will be led by Lord Charlie Falconer QC, a former secretary of justice in the UK. As it stands the commission is dubbed the London Drug Commission.

 

After visiting California to evaluate a cannabis dispensary, Khan was truly impressed by what he saw. However, Priti Patel, London’s Home Secretary has noted that Khan’s efforts do not hold water as he doesn’t have the power to legalize drugs. According to Patel, these drugs have ruined communities, destroyed lives, and torn families apart.

 

Khan in his response to the Home Secretary affirmed that there’s the need to have an open and honest conversation about the history of cannabis and cannabis laws in the UK. Khan also believes that the conversation should also involve the health consequences as regards the community. He believes the best approach towards this will be through the drug commission that has just been set up. 

 

While listening to the experts offer deeper insight, seeing it and experiencing it for oneself, learning about the herb on the field is a different experience….Khan explained

 

What the commission will do

After proper and in-depth research has been conducted by the commission, adequate proposals will be given to the government, City Hall, the justice system, public health services, and law enforcement. Also, if there’s a need for policy change, a proper evaluation of the effects of such changes will be provided by the University College London.

 

It’s important to note that medical cannabis use has been legalized in England since 2018, however, cannabis is still classified under Class B drugs. This means possession of cannabis holds a maximum sentence of 5 years imprisonment and/or an endless fine. Individuals who cultivate and distribute cannabis, face a maximum of 14 years imprisonment, an endless fine, or both.

 

In some cases, the penalties faced by arrested persons vary depending on the quantity of cannabis found in possession. Factors such as previous criminal records, where the drugs were found and other mitigating factors are also considered. In several cases, police also issue a fine of £90 on the spot for individuals caught in possession of cannabis.

 

According to a parliamentary report, possession of cannabis is the number one drug offense in Wales and England in 2021.

 

No support from Khan’s party

The Labour Party in the United Kingdom has stated that Khan’s initiative regarding cannabis reform will not be receiving any support from them. The party believes that it is not the Mayor’s duty to push for drug policy as that is the responsibility of the national government. 

 

Meanwhile, Steve Rolles, a policy analyst at the Transform Drug Policy Foundation during an interview with BBC Radio London aired his opinion. He believes that it would be best for the United Kingdom if they could study Uruguay, Mexico, and various countries that have decriminalized cannabis. Rolles affirmed that her UK will surely learn from these countries.

 

Similar to what Khan noted, Rolles, affirmed that the Uk’s cannabis policy has not worked out. The policy is not stopping youths from cannabis use and it continues to criminalize these young adults, especially black males. Rolles also pointed out that while the policy proves not to be effective it has also caused the just system so much money.

 

Therefore, a new perspective is due and like other countries have moved forward to decriminalize it, the UK can learn from their experiences.

 

 

Are Londoners in support of legalizing cannabis?

According to a survey carried out by the Evening Standard in 2019, it was revealed that about 63% of Londoners would back the regulation and legalization of marijuana. However, on a broader scale, about 47% of people residing in the UK would support cannabis legalization.

 

The survey was carried out as part of the marijuana debate campaign organized by the Evening Standard.

 

The survey revealed that the economic implications of legalizing marijuana persuaded most (72%) to give their support to cannabis reform. The fact remains that if cannabis is legalized, £2.5 billion will be redirected into the regular economy from the criminal circles.

 

In addition to this, 68% of the respondents were also persuaded by the argument that the government would be able to regulate cannabis potency. 66% of the respondents were also motivated by the idea that regulating cannabis would reduce violence.

 

Now, the 420 traditions have grown in London with cannabis users gathering at Hyde Park on the 20th of April, campaigning for cannabis legalization.

 

According to data made available by the Office for National Statistics, approximately 2.6 million residing in the UK consumed cannabis in 2020. This was the year the covid pandemic struck leaving everyone except essential workers stuck at home.

 

 

A common ground

A common ground both the home secretary and the mayor of London stand on is that drugs are ruining lives and communities and propelling violence. Priti Patel is also right to make it clear that the mayor has no legislative authority to effect cannabis reform. Only the Parliament has the authority to effect such changes.

 

As it stands, a lot of Londoners may reason with the home secretary that it might turn out to be a wasted effort for the mayor. Many believe establishing the drug commission is also a waste of public funds which should be diverted to fighting drug crime.

 

On the other hand, the mayor believes the issue of drug crimes could be tackled more effectively. He also expressed his disappointment that any other approach aside from enforcement is considered soft against crime.

 

 

Conclusion

 

The just established London Drugs Commission will likely be able to collect strong evidence that will support a change in approach. If so, that will greatly influence future policymaking and considerations. However, changes in legislation will not be happening soonest.
