Make no mistake, marijuana edibles are legal now in Minnesota

[ad_1]

ST. PAUL, Minn. — A new Minnesota law that took effect Friday allows people 21 and older to buy edibles and beverages that contain a limited amount of THC, the ingredient in marijuana that creates a high.

Legislators tried to regulate delta-8 THC. They legalized delta-9 THC instead. Bank error in your favor!

Edibles, like gummies, and beverages can contain up to 5 milligrams of THC per serving and 50 milligrams per package under the law. Five milligrams is about half the standard dose found in recreational marijuana products in other states.

Under the law, new THC products must be derived from legally certified hemp. But, industry experts say 5 milligrams will produce the same effect whether it’s derived from hemp or marijuana, the Star Tribune reported.

“This stuff will get you high, no doubt about it,” said attorney Jason Tarasek, founder of the Minnesota Cannabis Law firm and a board member of the Minnesota Cannabis Association. “Everybody’s calling it hemp-derived THC, which makes it sound like something other than marijuana. But I went on social media and I called it adult-use marijuana, because that’s what most people are going to consider this to be.”

How did this happen?

Apparently, in their zeal to regulate hemp-derived cannabis products containing compounds like delta-8 THC and THC-O, Minnesota state legislators passed a bill earlier this year that inadvertently legalized edibles containing delta-9 THC. That bill took effect as state law on July 1.

Delta-9 THC is what most people refer to when they say THC. It’s the compound that naturally occurs in cannabis, and is intoxicating when smoked.

Hemp, by legal definition, contains less than 0.3% delta-9 THC by weight. So in order to obtain delta-9 THC from hemp, processors must undertake a number of steps to first extract CBD from hemp, and then convert that CBD into delta-9 THC.

Hemp itself is federally legal, and is also legal in Minnesota.

Hemp stores are selling it now

Steven Brown, CEO of Nothing But Hemp, said he will begin selling a dozen new THC products Friday at his six Minnesota retail stores, with a few dozen more rolling out over the next month.

“In some ways, we legalized cannabis,” Brown said.

Nothing But Hemp operates stores in Minneapolis, St. Paul, Forest Lake, Maplewood Mall, White Bear Lake, Cloquet, and Chaska.

This pop-up appeared on the Nothing But Hemp website over the weekend:

Gov. Walz: You passed it, now wear it

Cannabis advocates say they’re surprised the law passed the Minnesota Legislature given Senate Republicans’ opposition to recreational marijuana legalization. Republicans blocked a bill to legalize cannabis earlier this year.

The Star Tribune has reported that Republican state Sen. Jim Abeler, chair of the Senate Human Services Reform Finance and Policy Committee, says he didn’t realize the new law would legalize edibles with delta-9 THC. He thought it was only regulating hemp-derived delta-8 THC products.

Abeler reportedly wants to repeal the new law. But Democratic Gov. Tim Walz and the Democrat-controlled House are in favor of cannabis legalization. So there may be some interesting negotiations happening in the near future.

Where to find products this weekend

If you’re interested in taking advantage of the legislature’s screwup, here’s a list of Nothing But Hemp store locations:

hemp-store-locations

Take it easy out there

And remember: Start low, go slow. Eat only one edible, then wait for the effects to kick in. It could take up to an hour. For adults who haven’t experienced the effects of edibles before, a single 5 mg gummy can be surprisingly potent.

July 2022 Leafly HighLight: Ice Cream Cake strain

July 2022 Leafly HighLight: Ice Cream Cake strain

[ad_1]

The searing month of July begs you to lose your cool. Leafly says: Stop it. Reach for a bowl of Ice Cream Cake and chill the eff out for at least one more afternoon.

All types of smokers—from everyday heads to novices—have made Ice Cream Cake a top 10 American dispensary staple in 2022. It’s gorgeous, award-winning, and has won over America in four years.

A modern classic, like frickin’ Beyonce—Ice Cream Cake is July’s national Leafly HighLight.

Since 2018, across US shops, this combo of the two champs Wedding Cake and Gelato #33 has spoken to people.

‘Thick, sweet, vanilla, creamy, minty, cookie dankness,’ the nose relates. Ice Cream Cake reviewers left sleepy, relaxed, and hungry notes, and they report it works on pain, anxiety, and insomnia.

Americans hit this dessert strain in every possible way. We’re seeing Ice Cream Cake from sea to shining sea in joints, bowls, blunts, infused blunts, carts, pods, live resin, live rosin, rosin, and even tinctures. Huzzah.

ice cream cake weed bud
Seed Junky, Josh D, and the Emerald Cup judges see something in Ice Cream Cake. But you don’t? … Sounds like a you problem. (David Downs/Leafly)

Now. Some weed snobs always say ‘Ice Cream Cake is played out.’ Indeed, popularity drives prices and quality down. But plenty of elite-tier growers still run ICC because both they and their shoppers frickin’ love it.

Case in point: scoreboards don’t lie: Ice Cream Cake has an average 4.6 out of 5, based on 923 reviews since 2018. It’s considered an indica hybrid with Starlink-level THC effects that hit calming and sedative. Bring plenty of water, do not operate heavy machinery, and get into a comfy spot mentally and physically.

The best Ice Cream Cake jumps out of the jar, and the creamy sweet vanilla smell can decohere into big whiffs of fuel/gas. All of this comes GSC and OG Kush family genes.

“Holy shit. Been smoking religiously for about 12 years. Few strains have hit me like this. Crazy powerful. Relaxation and pain relief are pronounced. Happy as can be,” states one Leafly reviewer.

Long summer days can get stressful and sleep-deprived. Not if you hit that cake.

“Absolute anxiety blaster and great for sleep. My anxiety gets pretty bad at night and prevents me from sleeping and this works on both fronts. 100%,” said one reviewer.

Weed, lest we forget, is fun, too. So if you’re watching TV, snogging, or zoning out, Ice Cream Cake works.

“I packed my bowl and sat in my bed not feeling much watching TV, doing my usual thing wondering why I haven’t felt anything yet. And then I realized I’ve been watching TV in Spanish the whole time. (I don’t speak Spanish) Have a good sesh! :)”

“Absolutely next level. Them boys out in Cali are NOT messing about. Taste, smell, and the high are all blinding. This bit of kit will blow a new smoker’s socks off.”

How much does Ice Cream Cake cost?

(Sasha Beck/Leafly)

Praise Baskin Robbins—it’s an Ice Cream Cake buyer’s market. You can find it from Long Beach, CA to Manhattan New York.

Prices vary by state market and quality. Eighth-ounces have hit $10 on the West Coast, but go as high as $50 in Boston or $60 in New York.

Splurge on some high-end ICC from Ember Valley in Cali ($40), or Phat Panda ($30) in Washington.

The Ice Cream Cake flood powers affordable extracts nationwide as well. A half-gram of Decibel ICC live rosin runs a bargain $30 in Oregon, versus $60 for a 0.5g cartridge in Illinois.

Ice Cream Cake flower spot prices around the US:

low-grademidshigh-grade
1 gram of flower$8$12$16
eighth (3.5 g)$18$35$50
quarter (7)g$35$70$90

Ice Cream Cake seeds

This is one strain you’ll want in your garden. (Leafly)

World-leading breeder/grower Seed Junky Genetics of Los Angeles sold ICC originally as seeds, leading to today’s bumper crop. But Seed Junky Genetics isn’t selling Ice Cream Cake seeds at the moment. Instead, knock-off cakes abound, especially overseas.

For better results, Seed Junky Genetics sells Cake Crasher (Wedding Cake x Wedding Crasher) that’ll crush it. Dark Heart Nursery in California has—Gelato Ice Cream clones on tap. Yum. And North Atlantic Seed Co has an easy ICC auto from Humboldt Seed Organization.

Ice Cream Cake awards

Both the Wedding Cake and Gelato #33 parents of Ice Cream Cake are champions of their own. Ice Cream Cake took home its most notable 1st place trophy in 2019, in The Emerald Cup mixed light category, submitted by grower Josh D (popularizer of OG Kush).

Ice Cream Cake terpenes

(Sasha Beck/Leafly)

Ice Cream Cake’s great not only for its icy white look and chilling THC scores, but it’s also got a trendy mix of aromatic molecules called terpenes. Lab tests show many samples average high in caryophyllene, limonene, and linalool; with myrcene, too.

These heavily gassy fuel smells can at times cohere into an opposite aroma—velvety soft sweet vanilla; especially in the Triangle Kush line, from which much of this pot springs.

For the real experience, shop fresh Ice Cream Cakes in the 2% plus range for terpenes.

Other highlights this July

Ice Cream Cake ran out? Don’t stress—here’s three more July campout and barbecue flavors.

donny burger nug
No milkshake and fries needed with this one. (David Downs/Leafly)

We support the continued countrywide hype around Donny Burger—which can smell funky, biting, cheesy, and savory, and make you one with a beach chair. Donny Burger is for GMO lovers—a mix of GMO Cookies to Han Solo Burger. (Han Solo Burger itself crosses GMO to Larry OG F8, so it’s got a lot of great GMO genes doing what we love.)

Skunk House Genetics bred Donny Burger and released it in 2017 at the Michigan High Times Cannabis Cup where it started to pick up heat. Follow Skunk House’s funk to hybrid effects that leave reviewers giggly, happy, and aroused. Top terpenes: pinene, caryophyllene, and humulene.

Add this juicy hybrid to your dayger rotation. (David Downs/Leafly)

Keep the campout lit with Watermelon—a strain that has become more of a flavor profile than a genetic at this point. The original, mythical Watermelon OG has spawned many crosses: Watermelon Kush, Watermelon Sherbert, Watermelon Punch, and Watermelon Zkittlez. They’re generally indica hybrids that can lift summertime sadness with sweet, tropical, grape, and berry notes. Prepare to meet three of our favorite dwarves: Sleepy, Hungry, and Relaxed.

cherry pie
She’s YOUR cherry pie! (David Downs/Leafly)

Lastly, super-classic Cherry Pie in July. Cherry Pie has 171 reported descendant strains over eight generations: Forbidden Fruit, Trophy Wife, Pie Face, Carbon Fiber, Forbidos, … It’s in carts, flowers good and bad, tinctures, and live resin. If it’s got Cherry Pie in it—we’ll dig in.

Breeder Pieguy’s creation first received a review on Leafly in 2011. Popularized by grower Jigga for Cookies and rapper Berner, Cherry Pie presaged Girl Scout Cookies. A mix of GDP x F1 Durb, Cherry Pie clones only moved in close underground circles. But its giggly, happy, arousing hybrid effects and berry, sweet, fruit taste ensured Cherry Pie’s takeover of the mainstream.

And that’s the flavors for Leafly HighLight July. Stay frosty.

Wait, what’s Leafly HighLight?

Leafly HighLight helps US weed shoppers discover all-star strains on dispensary shelves. Each month, Leafly News’ experts spotlight a trending, top 200 national cannabis strain you should know.

Tokes to-go: Best portable vapes for flower and extracts

Tokes to-go: Best portable vapes for flower and extracts

[ad_1]

Leafly editors and contributors choose products based on personal experience, consumer feedback, and overall quality. At times, we take samples to inform our reporting, but receive no commission from any resulting sales.

Choosing the best vaporizer can at times feel like wading through an ocean. There are multiple varieties, prices, and capabilities, but unless you are a tech expert, multiple controls and functions can be overwhelming.

So why buy a weed vaporizer instead of just smoking cannabis the old-fashioned way? Vaping is likely healthier, especially for the lungs. Additionally, vapes are discreet, create less odour, and allow consumers to optimize the flavour and potency of their weed.

A portable vaporizer is an investment, and the right one can serve you for years to come. In this list, we’ve curated vapes for concentrates or dried flower, as well as devices that can do both. They are all reusable, rechargeable, and produce vapour (not smoke) via combustion-less technology.

Camping with weed? 4 things you need to know

Camping with weed? 4 things you need to know

[ad_1]

Is it legal to consume cannabis while camping in Canada?

  • Parks Canada permits cannabis on private sites but not in common areas.
  • Ontario, British Columbia, and Alberta campsites are mostly weed-friendly.
  • Keep quantities under 30 grams (unless you have a medical exemption).
  • Smoking in the wrong areas can come with hefty fines.

For Canadians, dusting off the boxes of gear labelled “camping” and packing them into the car for a weekend in the woods is a rite of passage. Especially come summertime;  nature is calling us to take full advantage of the sunshine and warm-ish lakes in these fleeting, warm-weather months.

Driving out of the city and immersing yourself in natural beauty provides instant stress relief, but sometimes you want a little extra support from that old friend. Though weed is legal nationwide, there are still some places (and people) that frown upon taking a hit and even getting a whiff of pot in public.

Baby steps, right?

“Each province has its own set of guidelines to follow when it comes to cannabis consumption in Canadian Parks,” explains Owen Allerton, co-owner of Highland Cannabis, a Kitchener, Ontario-based retailer.

“Generally speaking, cannabis use is acceptable in most front-country individual campsites and trails across Canada, but regulations vary from province to province.”

explains Allerton

Here are four things you should know about camping with cannabis in Canada this summer:

You can smoke cannabis on most Parks Canada campsites, but not in communal areas

Smoking or using weed on a campsite that you’ve booked through Parks Canada is completely legal. Blaze it! This is because Parks Canada considers these registered sites private spaces; you can think of the designated area as your own backyard as you roll up or pack a bowl.

However, shared spaces on Parks Canada land, like washrooms, kitchen shelters, parking areas and roadways, national historic sites, and playgrounds, are cannabis no-go zones.

Additionally, a certain number of Parks Canada campgrounds abide by their own sets of rules and can choose whether or not to permit 4/20-friendly activities, even on registered sites.

It’s sort of the same way that some grounds will ban alcohol at various times of the year “in an effort to ensure that all visitors enjoy their stay,” a Parks member told CBC.

Ontario, BC, and Alberta have the most weed-friendly campgrounds

Legally camping with cannabis in Canada is one of the perks of legalization. (roxxyphotos/Adobe Stock)

It shouldn’t come as a surprise that Ontario, British Columbia, and Alberta are top of the list of the most weed-friendly camping locations in the nation. All three provinces have an abundance of retail stores and stunning campgrounds.

In fact, two-thirds of campgrounds in Alberta, British Columbia and Ontario have embraced pot, according to Highland Cannabis’ research, and these three provinces have relatively relaxed rules when it comes to where you can get high and use weed when camping and hiking.

In Ontario, you can consume cannabis in Parks Canada public areas like day-use swimming holes and backcountry trails, in addition to registered campsites. But consumption in public parks across Ontario isn’t allowed in common areas (washrooms, for example) or within 20 metres of a playground.

British Columbia and Alberta follow similar parameters. Day-use areas, registered campsites, trails and backcountry all get the green light to light up, but keep an eye out for fire ratings before you go in these parts. BC has experienced its fair share of devastating wildfires and you don’t want to be that jerk who causes a fire by carelessly tossing a butt into the woods.

Quebec and the Prairies have the least weed-friendly camping options

Quebec’s view on weed, much like the Prairies, “is a little strained,” says Allerton. “Although cannabis is legal across the country, it’s only legal in Quebec if you buy it through the Société Québécoise du Cannabis (SQDC).”

Given these strict laws, it makes sense that the rules around using cannabis while camping in Quebec are also tough.

The only place you can smoke cannabis in Quebec is at certain Parks Canada campgrounds while on your registered campsite; you cannot smoke in any outdoor public space (campground or otherwise).

Fines for cannabis smoking infractions are steep, ranging from $750 to $2,250 if caught breaking the rules.

You can legally carry 30 grams of dried weed (or the equivalent) on you at one time

When stocking up on booze for a camping weekend, you can grab as much beer or wine as you want. With cannabis, limits work differently. In Canada, adults can have up to “30 grams of legal cannabis, dried or equivalent in non-dried form in public,” according to the Cannabis Act.

The “equivalent” is varied and based on the consumption method. For example, one gram of dried cannabis is equal to 15 grams of edibles, which means you can legally carry 450 grams of your favourite gummies. Concentrates, on the other hand, are equal to 0.25 grams of dried product, so you can have 7.5 grams of solid or liquid concentrated on you at one time.

Still, it’s important to note that private campgrounds and different municipalities have varying rules on how much you can carry and where it can be used. Do your research into the specific community and facilities before you go in order to avoid any confrontations.

July 2022 Leafly HighLight: Ice Cream Cake strain

Works of fire: Best July 4 weed strains of 2022

[ad_1]

Fact: Americans enjoy more weed freedom and variety than any people in the history of the Earth. Our global competitors? Crazy backward about the pot.

Ganja’s a $25 billion legal industry and the country’s 5th largest cash crop, with 19 rec legalization states and more on the way. The California market alone boasts a mind-boggling 39,000 types of products. This July, newly legal New Yorkers will put smoke in the air. Floridians can hit a medical dispensary. Legalization polls better than any party or politician, because freedom effing rules.

Put down those M-80s and pick up some zaza—here’s 9 scorching weed strains of Independence Day 2022.

Red Velvet

Red Velvet. Indica hybrid. (David Downs/Leafly)
Red Velvet. Indica hybrid. (David Downs/Leafly)

We gotta start with the colors. When I think of a hot ‘red’ strain in summer 2022 that’s actually on the market, my mind goes to Red Velvet. Lemon Cherry Gelato to Pina Acai is pretty on-trend, and top Oakland growers Grandiflora claim it. Our Sunset Connect brand bag had a red hot cinnamon smell to it. There’s a lot of room for more red strains besides Red Dragon and Red Congo.

White Runtz

Sheesh! Umma Sonoma White Runtz. (Courtesy Ummas Sonoma)

Sheesh, UMMA Sonoma has the world’s best version of White Runtz, one of July’s most hyped strains. Just look at it—it’s literally white with trichomes. As if Runtz wasn’t blingy enough, White Runtz gets even icier than Runtz, which is Zkittlez x Gelato. That means tropical berry syrup over ice cream cookie smells—and yes, weed can do that. Umma grows for the best breeders and brands in the world, including Compound Genetics.

Blue Power

Shout out one of Las Vegas’ most impactful creations, Blue Power—powering today’s top flavors like Apples and Bananas from Cookies and Compound Genetics. Sin City Seeds’ Blue Power (Power x White Moonshine) has at least 43 direct offspring, and has spawned nine generations of strains: SinMint Cookies, Animal Mints, Kush Mints, Animal Face, Mint Chocolate Chip and on and on. Put some respect on Sin City’s name.

GMO Rootbeer

We spotted legit root beer-smelling weed in the wild for July 4—the mythical GMO Rootbeer strain. It’s like GMO lent all of its loudness to some root beer terps. Crazy high in THC and sets you down, of course. GMO x Rootbeer is reportedly a project of breeders Skunktek, and Mean Gene from Mendocino (aka Freeborn Selections). It’s been closely held, but it seems ready for a national debut. Root beer remains hella American for the 4th.

Miami Punch

Time to get sweaty. Chicago-based Revolution out in the midwest serves up Miami Punch this July 4th—a crowd-pleasing mix of Florida Orange x Purple Punch. The tropical, cream-cake taste precedes energizing, sativa hybrid effects. Terp heads will note the terpinolene, ocimene, and limonene leading the pack.

Spritzer

Weed that smells like root beer, creamsicles, cake, candy, or permanent markers? All in style for Independence Day 2022. Above, Cannarado Spritzer. (David Downs/Leafly)
Cannarado’s Spritzer gives us life. (David Downs/Leafly)

It’s really important to stay hydrated over the long 4th of July weekend, and that includes periodic hits of Spritzer. The Colorado breeder Cannarado combines Runtz, Grape Pie, and MAC—pretty much all the great stuff right now. Peel back layers of candied gas, sugary cereal, and bubblegum funk; the olfactory kaleidoscope never stops turning. This is what even the most the jaded industry folks get excited to smoke.

Jack Herer

Illinois, the land of Lincoln, cruises into summer number three of legalization with a classic: Rythm’s award-winning sativa staple Jack Herer. July 4th and the fight for independence lives in every puff of the sweet, energy strain. Activist Jack Herer envisioned radical pot freedom blooming across the land. Dare to dream just as big.

Landslide #4

Washington fire flower growers Freddy’s Fuego democratized exotic pot selection with The Hunt—a collection of fresh flavors smokers can buy and vote on this July. We’re shamelessly lobbying for Landslide #4, a canny cross of Lava Cake x Fleetwood MAC bred by Lit Farms. We voted it terpiest of the bunch during a June field trip. It’s got bright, intense Cake and MAC terps that just sweep you away; probably from the Melonade parentage. Put on some Stevie Nicks and vibe.

Permanent Marker

Doja Pak's Permanent Marker makes its mark. (Courtesy Doja Pak)

The writing’s on the wall—Los Angeles indie brand Doja Exclusive dropped Permanent Marker in June on both coasts. Bred and grown by Seed Junky Genetics’ JBeezy and selected by Doja Pak, the strain fuses several well-established cultivars: Biscotti x Jealousy x Sherb Bx. Floral, soapy, candy, and gassy funk smells fully translate into the taste. It has a lingering pungent flavor of a soapy funk with a hint of candy and floral gas tones. The potent strain brings out creativity for daytime relaxation, followed up by the munchies and the urge to roll up some more.

OK, we got an SUV to pack with camping gear, so we’re stopping at these nine. But rest assured, the country is blooming with fragrant, fresh, freedom-blessed trees. So light one up, and take a breath—because far more work on America awaits.
